Hopi Ear Candling
History of Ear Candling
The use of candles can be traced back to many ancient cultures throughout the centuries when it was used by folk healers for a variety of different reasons. Hopi candling as we understand it today owes much to the Native American tribes of both North and South America. Knowledge of healing and deep spirituality was brought back to Europe from the Hopi people who were the oldest Pueblo tribe.
Traditionally the Hopi Indians used ear candles to cleanse the aura of negative energy and to heighten spiritual awareness. Today of course Hopi candles are used for a variety of reasons, ear candling is also known as Thermo Auricular Therapy and as grown in popularity top treat a number of conditions.
Let’s take a look at the conditions that can be treated and helped:
- Excess ear wax
- Sinus problems
- Headaches
- Tinnitus
- Pressure relief after diving or flying
- Rhinitis
- Vertigo
The treatment is so calming that stress and anxiety can also be relieved.
The Candles
The candle is a thin, hollow linen tube. Each candle is handmade to a traditional recipe and incorporates honey, sage, St John’s wort and camomile, with bees wax been used dependent on the candles used.
There are some instances where ear candling is not suitable and these are people who have a perforated eardrum, wear grommets, and have an acute ear infection or inflammation of the ear and surrounding area. It has also been said that anyone in the first trimester of a pregnancy should reframe from having this treatment.
The Treatment
The recipient lies on one side, in a comfortable position, with their head supported by a pillow. The candle is placed in the outer ear and ignited. The candle is held at all times while it is burning down and you will be aware of gentle warmth and experience a pleasant crackling sound. The warm air softens any debris and excess wax in the ear and it is drawn into the base of the candle by a chimney effect.
The movement of the flame creates a vibration of air that generates a massage-like effect on the eardrum. Administering gentle heat locally stimulates the peripheral blood circulation, lymphatic and immune systems.
Once the candle has burnt down to a marked level it is removed and extinguished. The process is then repeated on the other ear. Each candle takes between 8 and 12 minutes to burn down.
Following the candling a neck and face massage is carried out. This enhances the actions of the ear candles. It can also help to drain the sinuses, eliminate toxins and help with lymphatic drainage.
The whole candling experience is so wonderfully relaxing and soothing that many people drift off to sleep.
After Treatment
You will be advised to lie quietly for a few minutes. Most people notice ‘lightness’ in the ear and head areas. The candle contents will be examined and if there is a long-standing problem the necessity of further treatments will be discussed.
